Sudan’s ongoing conflict faces another setback this week as the country’s army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, rejects U.S.-backed peace talks scheduled to take place in Geneva. In a strong statement, Burhan made it clear that a ceasefire would not be considered until the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) withdraw from all occupied cities and villages.
In an address marking Army Day, Burhan reiterated his stance, stating, “Military operations will continue until the last militia member leaves the cities and villages they have taken over.” His comments came just hours before the Geneva talks were set to begin, signaling the military’s refusal to participate in the peace process under the current circumstances.
Despite the army’s refusal, international efforts to resolve the conflict continue. The U.S. special envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, emphasized the ongoing commitment to ending the conflict, however, the absence of Sudan’s military from these negotiations makes it difficult to achieve meaningful progress.

The conflict between Sudan’s army and the RSF erupted in April 2023, stemming from disagreements over the integration of the RSF into the national military. The violence has since spread across the country, resulting in thousands of deaths and displacing millions of people. The humanitarian crisis is severe, with many facing shortages of food, medical supplies, and other essential resources.
In May 2023, both sides signed the Jeddah Agreement, which was supposed to ensure the protection of civilians and allow safe passage for those fleeing conflict zones. However, violations have been made by both the army and the RSF, further complicating peace efforts.
