The Al Gezira Scheme, one of the largest irrigation projects in the world, continues to play a crucial role in Sudan’s agricultural and economic landscape. Located between the Blue and White Nile rivers, this vast agricultural enterprise has been a cornerstone of Sudan’s economy since its establishment in the early 20th century.
However, recent developments have posed significant challenges and opportunities for this vital region.
Africa’s largest irrigation project, the enormous Gezira scheme, will not produce anything for the first time in a century due to the war. Looting and infrastructure damage, as well as significant displacement, have badly impacted production amid an enormous humanitarian crisis.

The Al Gezira Scheme was designed to harness the waters of the Blue Nile to irrigate the Gezira Plain, transforming the region into a major cotton-producing area. Over the years, the scheme has diversified to include other crops such as wheat, sorghum, and groundnuts, supporting millions of Sudanese farmers and contributing significantly to the nation’s GDP.
In recent months, the Al Gezira Scheme has faced a series of challenges exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The scheme’s infrastructure, already in need of modernization, has suffered from neglect and damage due to the conflict. Irrigation channels and other essential facilities have been compromised, impacting agricultural productivity.
