In the first half of 2024, Sudan has witnessed a staggering 136.67% increase in its inflation rate. The Central Bureau of Statistics has reported a significant rise in consumer prices, reflecting a critical economic crisis exacerbated by ongoing conflict. The impact of this inflation surge is being felt across the country, pushing millions into deeper economic hardship.
Among the various regions, the Northern State has been hit the hardest, recording an astonishing inflation rate of 721.71%. This region’s sharp increase in essential goods and services highlights the severe economic pressures facing its residents. Meanwhile, other states like Kassala and South Kordofan are not far behind, experiencing inflation rates of 273.05% and 251.47%, respectively.
Sudanese citizens are grappling with the harsh realities of job losses, unstable incomes, soaring food prices, and a rapidly depreciating local currency. The continuous conflict has only exacerbated these issues, leaving many unable to afford basic necessities. The strain is palpable, with residents expressing their despair and frustration on social media platforms.
The prices of food and commodities in Sudan skyrocketed again in the past few weeks due to further inflation and collapse of local currency. I don’t think we can afford another day of war. The people are hungry inside and outside active conflict zones.
