The Sudanese Armed Forces Regain Control Of The Presidential Palace In Khartoum

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have achieved significant victories in Khartoum over the weekend, retaking the Presidential Palace, the Central Bank, and the National Intelligence Service. They also regained control of Tuti Island and the Tuti Bridge, crucial connections between Omdurman, Bahri, and central Khartoum.

Despite these successes, the conflict continues..

Major military gains

With every win comes a loss…

Despite these gains, the conflict continues to exact a heavy toll. An RSF drone strike targeted the Presidential Palace shortly after its capture, resulting in the deaths of several individuals, including state TV journalists and two senior army media officers.

First time looks at downtown Khartoum

For the first time since April 2023, media crews have gained access to parts of downtown Khartoum, including the iconic Faculty of Engineering at the University of Khartoum. This development provides a rare glimpse into the city’s condition since the start of the war.

Symbolic win after 700+ days of conflict across Sudan

The recent military successes have definitely drawn international attention. The Washington Post described the recapture of the Presidential Palace as “a highly symbolic win for the government forces,” highlighting its significance in the broader context of the conflict.

The ongoing conflict has caused the world’s largest humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Relentless atrocities and worsening conditions have left millions suffering from famine and sexual violence, with children particularly at risk.

While the SAF’s recent victories are significant, the path to lasting peace remains fraught with challenges. The RSF’s continued presence in regions like Darfur and their establishment of a parallel government suggest that the conflict is far from over.

Both sides face allegations of war crimes, and the international community’s role in mediating and providing aid will be crucial in helping shape the Sudan’s future.
