Ramadan Szn is almost here, it’s a time of gathering, prayer and overall reflection. When spending the holy month in Kuwait, as an expat or Kuwaiti, there are a couple of things you should know.
Call them the basic Dos and Don’ts of Ramadan
Ramadan is a time for prayer and meditation, so maybe avoid playing loud music in your car, and even in your home to give people their space.
Smoking is one of the very few things that are prohibited during the holy month, and hey, maybe take it as an opportunity to quit!
Whether you choose to partake in the practice of fasting or not, it’s frowned up and illegal to eat in public during the holy month. If you do get caught eating, you can be fined up to KD 100 or jailed for a month. Restaurants are also not open during fasting hours, and that includes dine in, takeaways and delivery. Best to not do it, it’s also considered disrespectful by Kuwaitis.
Yes, that includes physical touch, hugs or any form of intimacy. Again, holy month and people want to be extra respectful during this time. You can hug or cuddle, indoors, at your house.
Fasting hard and people are oftentimes exhausted and a little slower than usual, try and give them some leeway and maybe help out if you can!
You may not choose to do so in your daily life, but Ramadan is considered a Holy time in most GCC countries. Plus, the abayas and thobes tend to come a many that time of year and they’re really cool. Seriously, Kuwaitis have the most gorgeous Abayas.
This time of the year is a very charitable time for practicing Muslims, why not join in and give back?
If Kuwaitis are anything, they’re welcoming. Join the iftar, see the nightlife, the vibes and calmness in the air are impossible to hate. Expert tip, get your host some dates on your way to the function, it never fails!
