The Pakistan Super League (PSL) will shift its initial matches behind closed doors and cancel its traditional opening ceremony as the country grapples with a severe fuel shortage. PCB Chairman and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed the decision on Sunday. The 11th edition of the league, which kicks off this Thursday, has now been scaled back from six host cities to just two: Lahore and Karachi.
The decision follows a high-level meeting between the PCB and the league’s franchises. The government has already instituted work-from-home policies and extended school closures to conserve energy as global supply chains face disruption.
Explaining the rationale behind barring spectators, Naqvi highlighted the contradiction of asking the public to stay home while hosting mass gatherings. He stated:
“The Prime Minister (Shehbaz Sharif) requested all of Pakistan to restrict their movements because of the fuel crisis. We closed schools and instituted work from home and increased the number of Eid holidays. We don’t know how long this war will last. But we can’t ask people to restrict their movements and then have 30,000 people in stadiums every day. We decided that as long as this crisis is ongoing, we will not have crowds at matches.”

While the lack of fans will significantly alter the atmosphere of the matches, the PCB maintains that the tournament must proceed to honor international commitments and maintain its “window” in the crowded global cricket calendar.
“We don’t know how long the current situation will persist, but hosting the PSL is essential. It’s an international brand, and foreign players are involved… if we had postponed the PSL, there would be no window later to hold it,” Naqvi added.

The PCB has pledged to facilitate full refunds for all fans who had already purchased tickets for the 2026 season. The Chairman expressed regret over the situation, acknowledging the disappointment of the cricket-loving public.
