Omani universities recently scored big on the global stage! Five of the nation’s higher education institutions were recognized in the prestigious 2026 QS World University Rankings, showcasing Oman’s growing academic prowess. This notable achievement highlights the country’s commitment to elevating its educational standards.
Dr. Maryam Bil’arab Al Nabhani from the Ministry of Higher Education explained that QS uses several key factors to evaluate universities. This includes looking at academic reputation through surveys of experts, employer reputation to see how well graduates get jobs, and the ratio of faculty to students which indicates educational quality. They also measure research impact through citations and check international diversity via faculty and student ratios. This aligns with Oman Vision 2040’s goal to place four Omani universities among the top five hundred globally in QS rankings.
Several Omani universities saw positive results in the latest rankings. Sultan Qaboos University showed significant improvement, jumping up twenty-eight spots to reach the three hundred and thirty-fourth position worldwide. The University of Nizwa placed within the seven hundred and sixty-one to seven hundred and seventy bracket, while Dhofar University was in the eight hundred and fifty-one to nine hundred range. Sohar University entered the rankings in the nine hundred and fifty-one to one thousand category, and the German University of Technology in Oman, or GUtech, was positioned between one thousand and one and one thousand two hundred.

The performance indicates the steady advancement of Oman’s academic and research infrastructure, as reported by Quacquarelli Symonds, the UK-based higher education analyst.
