Oman recently rolled out the third phase of its plastic bag ban, surprising shoppers who found themselves needing to purchase reusable alternatives. This move is part of a larger initiative to protect the environment and marine life from the long-term impact of single-use plastics.
Shoppers in Muscat were in for a surprise on Wednesday when they visited their local supermarkets, only to find that the usual plastic bags were no longer being handed out. Many, like Sujata and Sohail, were caught unaware and had to quickly purchase ‘green’ reusable bags, costing around 125 baisas, to carry their groceries home. This unexpected change signaled the full force of the third phase of Oman’s plastic bag ban.
This latest phase, which began on July 1, 2025, aligns with Decision No. 8/2024, enforcing stricter regulations on plastic bag usage. The Environment Authority initiated phase one back on July 1, 2024, targeting thinner single-use plastic bags for produce and general groceries. Phase two followed on January 1, 2025, extending the ban to textile, mobile, and other retail shops, showing a clear progression towards a plastic-free future.
The Environment Authority emphasizes the critical reasons behind this widespread ban, highlighting the devastating impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems. A single plastic bag, though seemingly small, can persist for decades, posing a significant threat to sea creatures. Fish, turtles, and whales often mistake plastic for food, leading to fatal digestive blockages or suffocation, while entanglement can cause severe injuries or death.
For those looking for practical solutions, the Environment Authority has encouraged the adoption of fabric and paper bags as excellent reusable alternatives. Shoppers like Sohail are now committed to keeping these eco-friendly bags in their cars, ensuring they are always prepared for their next shopping trip. This collective shift towards sustainable practices makes a substantial difference in preserving Oman’s beautiful natural environment.
