8-Year-Old Doha Talat Reportedly Abducted By Israeli Soldiers From Rafah

On August 30, an Instagram post by Israeli soldier Ido Zahar drew significant attention after he shared a photo with 8-year-old Doha Talat, who was reportedly taken by the IDF near the Rafah crossing in late July. The post was swiftly removed, and Zahar’s account was made private, sparking further investigation into the girl’s whereabouts and the circumstances of her disappearance.

Palestinian journalist Younis Tirawi revealed, in a post on X, that the Israeli military has yet to provide a detailed response, only stating that they are “checking into the incident.” Efforts to interview Zahar were met with resistance; he reportedly asked for the story to be deleted, saying, “No story. No face. No nothing. Please delete this completely from everywhere.”

This case comes amid widespread reports of missing children in Gaza since the conflict began on October 7th. An earlier interview on Israeli military radio, which was later retracted, included controversial claims about rescuing a baby in Gaza. The Palestinian foreign ministry at the time called for an investigation, suggesting that the incident could constitute a serious war crime.

Despite dismissing these allegations as unfounded, the Israeli military has not yet clarified the situation surrounding Doha Talat. A Save the Children report titled “The Missing Children of Gaza” and a UN Human Rights Council press release from May highlight numerous cases of women and girls from Gaza being forcibly disappeared by the Israeli military.

A soldier from the 432nd Battalion, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted an operation near Rafah where Doha Talat and an elderly man emerged from a house. The soldier claimed the elderly man had offered to show the soldiers tunnel shafts, but was later accused of being affiliated with Hamas—a controversial and unverified accusation.

The case of Doha Talat remains unresolved, with her fate still unknown and the incident under scrutiny. Calls for transparency and accountability continue as the search for Doha persists.
