In the heart of Gaza, amidst the devastation of relentless airstrikes, a story of resilience and hope emerged that captured the world’s attention. Nine-year-old Maryam Sabah, a bright-eyed girl with dreams of becoming a doctor, found herself at the center of a medical miracle after losing her hand in a brutal bombing that destroyed her home.
When Maryam arrived at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, her condition was critical. Her hand had been severed, and she suffered a severe stomach injury. Dr. Mohammed Taher, an Iraqi surgeon and chief of surgery with FAJR Scientificus, examined her and quickly asked her father, “Can you bring me the limb?”
Her father, stunned but determined, returned hours later with the severed hand, which had been buried under the rubble of their home. Dr. Taher carefully examined the limb and found it viable for reattachment. “The weather was freezing, the hand was cold,” he said. “When I dissected it, I found it ready to be reattached.”
In a grueling five-hour surgery, Dr. Taher meticulously restored the limb, overcoming the challenges of limited resources and harsh conditions. Although the operation was a success, the hand faced a risk of infection due to chemical contamination from the missile explosion.
Maryam’s resilience inspired everyone around her. When asked how she felt after the surgery, she simply said, “Alhamdulillah.” Her unyielding faith and determination to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor touched hearts worldwide.

Dr. Taher arrived in Gaza months earlier as part of a medical delegation with FAJR Scientifics. His mission was to provide critical care to the wounded and train local medical staff. After three months of tireless work, he was set to return to London. However, Maryam’s case changed his plans.
“I witnessed many difficult cases during my work in northern Gaza,” Dr. Taher explained. “Some could have been saved, but they lost their lives due to a shortage of specialized medical staff or essential supplies.”
The overwhelming reality of Gaza’s medical crisis compelled him to stay. Hospitals were overcrowded, surgical tools were scarce, and freezing weather added to the suffering of the injured. Despite these challenges, Dr. Taher remained in Gaza to continue saving lives.
“I couldn’t leave,” he said. “Not when there are so many who still need help.” His decision to stay, even as airstrikes intensified, reflected his unwavering dedication to his patients.

Over five months in Gaza, Dr. Taher performed countless surgeries under extreme conditions. Maryam’s operation symbolized hope amid the horrors of war. “He brought a girl’s hand back to life after it was amputated due to the Israeli occupation’s bombing of her home,” a witness remarked.
The ongoing Israeli genocide has devastated Gaza, claiming thousands of lives and injuring countless others. Entire families have been wiped out, homes reduced to rubble, and the healthcare system has been pushed to the brink.
Dr. Taher highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, where basic medical supplies are scarce, and doctors are overwhelmed by the volume of casualties. He urged international medical professionals to come to Gaza and provide their expertise. He also called on global institutions to deliver the medical supplies urgently needed to save lives.
As Maryam continues her recovery, her story stands as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the extraordinary acts of kindness that can emerge even in the darkest times. Dr. Taher’s dedication and Maryam’s unwavering hope inspire us all to believe that, even amid destruction, miracles are possible.
