Despite the anticipated release of Edan alexander, Israeli prime minister Netanyahu announced that negotiations with Hamas would proceed ‘under fire’, with just a temporary pause. This statement underscores Israel’s intention to intensify its military operations in Gaza, emphasizing that the release does not signal a broader ceasefire agreement.
According to prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, negotiations will continue amidst preparations for intensified fighting, as stated on Monday. The Israeli leader insisted that the military pressure was the reason for Hamas’ agreement to the release.
Israel clarified that it has not committed to any form of ceasefire or prisoner exchange, only agreeing to safe passage for alexander’s release. A Hamas source later indicated that mediators informed them of a pause in military operations for the handover.
Hamas announced that alexander’s release was imminent and was intended as a goodwill gesture to us president Donald Trump. Previously, the group disclosed that they had agreed to the release in discussions with the us, with Arab mediators Qatar and Egypt seeing it as a positive step towards resuming ceasefire talks.
Khalil Al-Hayyah, a Hamas leader, expressed readiness to immediately start intensive negotiations for a long-term truce. This truce would include ending the war, exchanging prisoners, and handing over power in Gaza to an independent body.
