Israeli Military’s Systematic Use of Palestinian Civilians as Human Shields Exposed in New

A recent investigation by Haaretz has uncovered a disturbing and systematic practice within the Israeli military: the use of Palestinian civilians, including children and the elderly, as human shields. This practice, which is illegal under international law, has been carried out with the knowledge and approval of senior Israeli military officials, including the Chief of Staff.

The investigation reveals that young Palestinian men, often in their 20s, are coerced into wearing Israeli military uniforms and sent into highly dangerous areas, such as destroyed buildings and tunnel entrances, ahead of Israeli soldiers. Their hands are tied, and they are equipped with cameras, while Israeli soldiers monitor their movements from a safe distance. This tactic, aimed at protecting Israeli soldiers at the expense of Palestinian civilians, has become more widespread in recent months.

Israeli soldiers have admitted that their own lives were prioritized over those of Palestinians.

Despite claims by the Israeli military that these incidents are under investigation and do not reflect their values, soldiers involved in these operations have contradicted the official narrative. They have testified that the use of human shields is a common and sanctioned practice, not an isolated event. One soldier recounted a harrowing incident where a terrified Palestinian man was forced to scout a tunnel while senior officers watched on a monitor.

The investigation also highlights that this practice is not limited to adult men; teenagers and the elderly have also been forced into these dangerous roles. The Haaretz report draws parallels between this current practice and the “neighbor procedure” used by the Israeli army during the 2002 Operation Defensive Shield in the West Bank, where civilians were forced to enter potentially booby-trapped buildings ahead of soldiers.

Calls for Accountability

Palestinian officials and human rights organizations have long documented the Israeli military’s use of human shields and are once again calling for immediate international intervention. The need for accountability and justice is more urgent than ever as this inhumane practice continues with impunity.
