In a shocking report released on Monday, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor has detailed the alarming tactics employed by Israeli forces in northern Gaza, including the deployment of booby-trapped robots loaded with explosives and the planting of explosives in civilian homes. This escalation in military strategy began in May during Israel’s second incursion into the Jabalia refugee camp and has since resulted in extensive destruction and loss of life.
The rights group highlighted multiple testimonies indicating that these remotely detonated robots have caused widespread devastation to nearby homes and buildings, severely hampering civil defense and ambulance operations. According to the report, Israel has intensified its destruction of residential structures through three primary methods: aerial bombardment, the use of explosive robots, and the strategic planting of explosives within homes.
Critically, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor has asserted that the utilization of booby-trapped robots is in violation of international law. These devices pose an indiscriminate threat, often impacting civilians alongside military targets. The ongoing violence has left survivors vulnerable, not only to further military action but also to the looming specter of starvation and lack of essential resources, exacerbated by Israel’s blockade of humanitarian aid to northern Gaza.

The report paints a dire picture, revealing that over 200,000 people in northern Gaza are currently living amidst the ruins of destroyed homes and shelters. An additional 200,000 face the dual threats of bombing and severe shortages of food and basic necessities. As a result, more than 400,000 residents in this beleaguered region are at grave risk of forced starvation, displacement, and death.
