Opposition politician and former IDF general Yair Golan warned that Israel risks becoming a global outcast. In a radio interview, he said, “A sane country does not kill babies for a hobby.” He also criticized the government for waging war on civilians and planning population expulsions.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fiercely condemned Golan’s remarks, accusing him of “wild incitement” and of repeating “the most despicable antisemitic blood libels” against Israeli forces and the state.

Leaders from both the government and opposition criticized Golan. Yair Lapid said the comments were false and would help Israel’s enemies. Education Minister Yoav Kisch demanded an incitement investigation. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar warned the statement would fuel global antisemitism. Meanwhile, military chief Eyal Zamir defended the army’s actions and rejected any doubts about its morality.
Responding to backlash, Golan emphasized that his critique targeted the government’s decisions, not the military. “The army is my home,” he said, adding that the current leadership is pushing policies that reflect the extremist visions of far-right ministers like Ben Gvir and Smotrich.

Golan, now leader of the left-wing Democrats party, has consistently opposed Netanyahu’s government. In 2024, he accused Netanyahu of putting political survival above national interest after the sacking of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. His controversial reputation dates back to a 2016 speech where he compared trends in Israeli society to 1930s fascist Europe.
The outrage over Golan’s words comes amid reports that more than 16,000 children have been killed in Gaza since October, a number that continues to draw international condemnation and deepen scrutiny of Israel’s genocide Gaza.
