Rafah Crossing Reopens: A Dozen Return Amid Strict Rules and Shocking Testimonies

On February 2, the Rafah border crossing saw a partial reopening, but it wasn’t exactly a smooth ride home for many. Despite hopes for dozens, only a small group of 12 Palestinians managed to make their way back into Gaza, facing a host of unexpected challenges and strict rules.

A Limited Welcome Home

The much-anticipated reopening of the Rafah crossing on February 2 allowed a mere 12 Palestinians to return to Gaza. This small group, consisting of nine women, three children, and one elderly person, arrived at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis with a UN escort, highlighting the tight control over the process. Earlier statements had suggested that at least 50 individuals would be permitted to enter, making the actual number a stark contrast to expectations.

Strict Rules and Empty Hands

Returning Palestinians faced incredibly strict regulations at the crossing. Each person was allowed to bring only one bag, filled exclusively with clothes. Essential items like food, water, medicine, and even children’s toys were strictly forbidden and confiscated. One woman recounted how they couldn’t bring anything to make their children happy; even a small girl’s toy was taken away, leaving families with virtually nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Harrowing Accounts of Interrogation

The journey back was far from easy, with one Palestinian woman bravely sharing her ordeal. She described being arbitrarily detained, blindfolded, and tied up by the Israeli army, alongside her mother and another woman. They faced intense questioning about topics they claimed no knowledge of, including Hamas and the events of October 7. She also spoke of threats to deprive them of their children and attempts to coerce them into becoming informants, painting a picture of intimidation and humiliation.

A Cry Against Displacement

Amidst the challenging conditions, a powerful sentiment emerged from those returning. As her bus entered Gaza, one woman passionately rejected any notion of forced displacement, repeatedly exclaiming, ‘No one leaves Gaza,’ and ‘No to displacement!’ Her emotional plea underscored the deep-seated desire of Palestinians to remain in their homes, even as the reality of the crossing’s partial reopening exposed a significant gap between official announcements and the harsh experiences on the ground.
