Swedish billionaire Roger Akelius is making headlines for an extraordinary humanitarian effort: he has pledged $75 million to build 400 schools in Gaza, aiming to provide education for 100,000 children living in a war-torn, blockaded region. This initiative goes beyond classrooms, it is about rebuilding childhoods and futures.
Nearly 97% of Gaza’s schools have been damaged or destroyed over the past two years. Akelius’ plan includes temporary tent schools for immediate use and permanent buildings, each designed to accommodate around 250 students. The project also provides safe play areas for children to process trauma and delivers 100,000 meals per day for five years, combining education and care.

The Akelius Foundation is contributing $75 million, one of the largest single donations ever made to UNICEF Sweden. The Swedish government adds another $35 million, bringing the total to over $100 million. UNICEF will help implement the project, using its “Back to Learning” programs and logistics to ensure the children who need help most receive it.
Akelius has highlighted the hurdles ahead, including restrictions on materials and personnel and safety concerns for teachers and students. The initiative also includes digital learning in Math and Languages to support over 650,000 children who have been out of school for more than two years.

Even with a ceasefire easing some violence, Gaza’s schools remain in ruins. Experts describe this project as a bold effort to restore education for a generation growing up amid war. For the children of Gaza, this is more than a donation, it is a lifeline that offers classrooms, meals, and safe spaces, showing how one person’s vision can create a tangible difference.
