Loud Booms Heard Across The UAE After High-Altitude Missile Interceptions

What happened?

The defence system intercepted incoming missiles more than 100 kilometres above the country. Because these interceptions happened at extreme altitude and very high speed, they created sonic booms that travelled long distances and were heard on the ground.

The loud noise was not an explosion at ground level, but a shockwave caused by objects moving faster than the speed of sound.

What is THAAD?

THAAD stands for Terminal High Altitude Area Defence. It is an advanced missile defence system designed to destroy incoming missiles by directly hitting them in the air before they reach their target.

The system operates at very high altitudes, which helps reduce risks on the ground.

Situation under control

Authorities confirmed that the situation was under control. The interceptions were carried out as part of the country’s air defence operations.

Residents are advised to rely only on official sources for accurate updates.
