Here’s A Glimpse Of What Riyadh Will Look Like In The Future

Avatar

With so many BIG development projects taking place in Riyadh ATM we thought of taking you, our dear readers, on a journey on what the city will look like in a few years’ time. Trust us, you won’t be able to recognize it. It has already come so far from being a city being a town with just a little over 100,000 people in the 50s to now becoming the most populated city in the Gulf and by a fair margin. It continues to leap forward, so here’s a quick rundown of what’s all going to change. Before we begin here’s what happened in just 20 years.

1. Green Riyadh

The Green Riyadh Project will see over 7.5 million trees planted across the city and the development of many green spaces. By doing this the total green space in the city will span 541 square kilometers – that’s almost the size of Bahrain. Incredible!

2. The Largest Public Park In The World

The park, known as the King Salman Park, will be four times the size of New York’s Central Park, measuring 13.4 square kilometers! Phase-1 of it has already opened and that’s pretty huge as well.

3. Riyadh Metro

The Riyadh Metro, which is anticipated to open soon as part of the King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project, will overhaul the city’s entire public transportation system. The metro is being built at a cost of over $20 billion! It will definitely help in reaching Saudi Arabia’s ambitious net-zero carbon emissions goal and is just what’s needed to accommodate the extra millions that are predicted to be added to the city’s overall population. Lifesaver!

4. Qiddiya

Okay, technically it’s not in Riyadh but it’s not far from us here so we’ve included it anyway. Now, what can we say about Qiddiya? The whole country is looking forward to it as it is bound to become the premier destination for entertainment in the country. The rides, entertainment options and experiences will be on a scale never seen before. It will have Six Flags’ largest theme park yet, the fastest roller coaster in the world and the tallest drop-tower ride in the world. Feeling the adrenaline rush just thinking about it. The first phase is expected to open in 2023.

5. Sports Boulevard

Vision 2030 is big on livable cities and to make the capital more “livable” a 135-kilometer Sports Boulevard is in the works. It will go from the Wadi Hanifah valley in the west to the Wadi Al Sulai Valley in the east, connecting the two valleys. Just what we need to burn those calories that all those addictive fast food restaurants that keep springing up in the city tend to give us.
