Visible to the naked eye, Saturn will appear as a bright, golden star beside the moon, forming a breathtaking scene for stargazers across the Arab world.
Majed Abu Zahra, head of the Jeddah Astronomical Society, explains that Saturn, the second largest planet in our solar system and primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, will sit close enough to the moon to be seen together through a telescope’s field of view.
This alignment makes it a perfect night for anyone with a telescope to explore Saturn’s unique features. For the first time since 2009, the planet’s rings align directly with Earth’s perspective, revealing Saturn’s full disk, a view that won’t last long. The rings are expected to tilt away from Earth starting in 2025, gradually changing the planet’s appearance.
Since October 2017, the view has been slowly closing, making tonight’s celestial event an even rarer chance to see the full beauty of Saturn’s disk before its rings vanish from sight. So, grab a telescope and witness a magical moment that brings the beauty of the cosmos right to your backyard!
