A Saudi Artist Transforms Leftover Dates Into Sustainable Fashion!

Hera Shabbir

Lamees Alfadhel took the ordinary and made it into an extraordinary fashion statement, of producing vegan leather sheets from damaged and leftover dates. The machine itself: Qitmeer, was actually her graduation project, stemming from her curiosity and love for science.

Lamees’ passion for sustainability through her beautiful culture lead her to create the unique fashion tool

As reported by Arab News, Lamees found inspiration in cultural designs that incorporate elements of Saudi Arabia, such as the iconic date palm trees. She also stated,  “While I may not have realized it immediately after high school, I soon discovered that product design brings together a captivating mix of different disciplines, allowing me to combine my interests and create innovative solutions.”

The vegan leather-making machine, Qitmeer, grinds the dates, mixing them with additives, then pouring them into molds

This starts the first half of the drying process, before she prepares them for a finishing and coloring process!

Lamees also won second place for her E-VIVE project at the Industry Hackathon in Saudi
