King Salman announced a new royal decree that has paved the way for citizenship for children of Saudi mothers and foreign fathers, according to the Khaleej Times.

They won’t be granted it at birth though, the child will have the option to apply for Saudi citizenship once he or she turns 18.

The decree amends Article 8 of the kingdom’s citizenship law.

The applicants must meet a number of requirements before they can become citizens, according to the report, including being born and living permanently in the kingdom, being able to speak Arabic, having good moral character, not having any criminal convictions, and not having served more than six months in prison for any indecent act.

The decree also made a change to the law, under which now citizenship will be granted by the prime minister.
