Brilliant University Students Develop Smart Cane With Camera Technology For Visually Impaired

Hera Shabbir

Six talented women from Prince Sultan University have taken accessibility to the next level with their innovative creation, Percevo—an attachment designed to enhance spatial awareness for the visually impaired.

They built a technology-driven cane to ease daily commute for the visually impaired

What started as a class project quickly became a passion project for these enthusiastic students from the College of Computer and Information Sciences. Raneem Al-Soby, Aisha Ashworth, Haifa Eddin, Asma Khan, Danna Bakkr, and Dana Elhaj, under the guidance of Dr. Anees Ara and Prof. Tanzila Saba, embarked on a meticulous journey of design and innovation.

Their process was anything but ordinary. They dove into extensive research on existing technologies and the unique challenges faced by visually impaired individuals. With creativity in full gear, they sketched diagrams and built virtual circuits to ensure everything clicked perfectly. They even designed an ergonomic bent handle for natural wrist movement, prioritizing comfort and usability.

The cane uses discreet camera and sensors to provide spatial awareness

In just three months, their hard work paid off with a fully functional prototype. With AI-driven microcomputer technology, the device relays information through voice prompts, giving users the feeling of having a constant companion by their side. Percevo not only won these girls first place at the Prince Sultan University CCIS Expo but was also showcased at LEAP 2024!
