An innovative initiative has been launched by the Minister of Transport and Logistic Services, Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser, to enhance the comfort and well-being of pilgrims during this year’s Hajj.

The initiative involves using flexible rubber asphalt in pedestrian walkways at the holy sites, aiming to improve public health and the overall pilgrim experience.
Recycled rubber turned into eco-friendly asphalt
Implemented in collaboration with various entities, this scientific innovation introduces recycled rubber from tires into asphalt mixtures. Not only does this help reduce tire waste accumulation, but it also minimizes pollution from tire burning, contributing to environmental sustainability.
This initiative is in an effort to reduce pilgrim discomfort

Experiments have revealed that traditional asphalt surfaces and sidewalks often cause discomfort and issues for pilgrims’ ankles and feet, especially the elderly, who comprise a significant portion of pilgrims. In fact, over half of all pilgrims fall into this category.
Foot and ankle injuries are common during the Hajj season
During the Hajj season, there’s typically increased demand for health facilities, with a considerable percentage of injuries concentrated in the foot and ankle area. This underscores the urgent need for improvements in pedestrian walkways.
By implementing flexible rubber asphalt technology, the pressure on pilgrims’ ankles and feet is expected to be reduced significantly, providing a more comfortable walking experience. This innovation is anticipated to enhance public health among pilgrims and ultimately improve their overall quality of life during the Hajj pilgrimage.
