Hamdan Al-Turki Returns To Saudi Arabia After Spending 20 Years In A U.S. Prison

Saudi national Hamdan Al-Turki has officially returned home after spending nearly two decades behind bars in the United States.

His arrival marks the end of a long and complex legal journey that began in 2006, and a moment many in the Kingdom have awaited for years.

Al-Turki was originally sentenced to 28 years in prison by a court in Colorado, exceeding the state’s own definition of a life sentence, which is 25 years

He was held at Limon Correctional Facility, where he remained for nearly 20 years. In a major legal turn in 2025, Hamdan’s defense team uncovered a significant error in the original trial and filed for a retrial. The presiding judge acknowledged the mistake, and the appeal was further supported by key documents. Among them was a letter from the Director of the Colorado Department of Corrections commending Al-Turki for his positive influence within the prison system. Another came from the facility’s medical supervisor, who cited the high cost of Al-Turki’s medical care and recommended he be sent home to receive treatment in Saudi Arabia.

Following these developments, Hamdan Al-Turki was released on May 9, 2025

On his journey back to the Kingdom, he was seen enjoying a traditional cup of Saudi coffee, an emotional and symbolic moment marking his long-awaited return. Soon to be back back on Saudi soil, Hamdan’s return is being seen as a powerful reminder of justice, perseverance, and homecoming after years spent away from his family and homeland.
