Saudi Arabia and the broader Islamic community are mourning the loss of Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Al-Sheikh, the Kingdom’s Grand Mufti and President of the Council of Senior Scholars, who passed away on Tuesday, 1 Rabi’ Al-Thani 1447 AH.
His death marks the end of an era for Islamic scholarship in Saudi Arabia and the Muslim world.

Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Al-Sheikh, appointed as Grand Mufti in 1999 by King Fahd, was a prominent figure in Islamic jurisprudence. Throughout his tenure, he held significant positions, including:
Chairman of the Council of Senior Scholars
President of the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta
Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Muslim World League
On the evening of Tuesday, 23 September 2025, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, led the funeral prayer for the late Grand Mufti at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh. The prayer, held after Asr, was attended by a significant number of officials, scholars, and citizens, reflecting the Sheikh’s profound impact on the nation.
Following the prayer, Crown Prince Mohammed and the late Sheikh’s sons received condolences from princes and religious scholars.
Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, and Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa each sent messages of sympathy, acknowledging the Sheikh’s significant role in Islamic scholarship and his dedication to the service of Islam and Muslims.
As the Kingdom and the Islamic world reflect on his legacy Sheikh Abdulaziz’s commitment to knowledge, moderation, and service to Islam will be remembered and honored.
