No More Bank Chats! Saudi Bans WhatsApp Messages From Banks To Customers

Hera Shabbir

Say goodbye to those quick bank messages on WhatsApp! The Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) has officially banned local banks from using instant messaging apps like WhatsApp to communicate with customers. The reason? These apps aren’t considered secure or reliable enough for handling sensitive financial matters, according to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper.

SAMA made this decision to ensure safer banking practices and reduce risks.

Instead, banks are being encouraged to adopt secure alternatives like Live Chat or ChatBot services on their official apps and websites

The goal is to keep customer interactions secure while improving service quality.

Banks have been instructed to roll out these secure communication channels ASAP and to train their employees, especially those in customer service, branches, and marketing on the new rules.

Officials are also reminding customers of scammers and fraud charities!

The Media and Awareness Committee at Saudi Banks has also warned customers about fraudsters impersonating charities and public figures on social media. These scammers pretend to offer financial help, using fake documents and seals to trick people into paying fees for supposed assistance. The committee stressed that legitimate organizations do not offer donations or search for beneficiaries through social media or messaging apps. If someone asks for money in exchange for a donation, it’s most likely a scam!

Use secure payment channels like SADAD

To protect yourself, always use secure payment channels like SADAD, available in all Saudi banks and banking apps, for bill payments and official transactions. If you suspect fraud, report it to your bank immediately so they can take action. Saudi banks are stepping up efforts to fight financial fraud with nationwide awareness campaigns.

By staying alert and following safe banking practices, customers can avoid falling into fraudsters’ traps!
