The inaugural Syrian Airlines flight from Damascus landed in Riyadh with 170 passengers on board, symbolizing a fresh start in bilateral ties.
Ayman Soussan, Syria’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, highlighted that the agreement includes one weekly round-trip flight connecting the capitals of Damascus and Riyadh. This move underscores the growing normalization between the two nations.
Syrian Transport Ministry official Suleiman Khalil expressed optimism about expanding the route to include airports in Jeddah and Dammam, contingent upon passenger demand. This potential expansion could further enhance connectivity and bilateral exchanges between Saudi Arabia and Syria.
The resumption of commercial flights marks a significant milestone since flights were suspended in 2012 amidst strained relations following Syria’s civil war. Earlier this year, flights temporarily resumed for pilgrims participating in the annual Hajj pilgrimage, paving the way for broader reestablishment of air travel links between the two countries.
