Riyadh beat the capitals of France, Germany and Spain in the global Smart City ranking!

The Smart City index studies how global cities are using technology to achieve a higher quality of life for its residents. Saudi Arabia’s capital was ranked 30th on the global list of 141 cities, actually making it the third highest Arab city. UAE’s cities took the lead for the Arab cities with Abu Dhabi coming in 13th place and Dubai in 17th.

Makkah, Jeddah, and Medina were also included in the list for the first time!

Makkah was 52nd, making it the fourth highest Arab city, followed by Jeddah coming in 56th and Medina in 85th place. As reported by the Saudi Press Agency, the high rank given to Riyadh was due to the consistent efforts of embedding technology in the city with the significant National Smart City Platform project, launched by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority.

Zurich in Switzerland took first place, followed by Olso in Norway, and Canberra in Australia.
