Dr. Mohammed Al-Abd Al-Aly, Saudi Arabia’s ministry of health spokesman, has refuted claims that mucormycosis, a rare and potentially deadly infection also known as black fungus, is not a variant of COVID-19 or has any affiliation with it.
He said that the fungus was caused by a mold found in damp environments that caused respiratory tract infections.
Al-Aly said that Saudi health authorities were constantly following up on patients who had recovered from the disease. The fungus required a particular environment for it to infect patients who had poor immune responses. The causes of the infection were still unclear, he said
Al-Aly has also insisted that people focus on getting vaccinated. He said that residents above the age of 60 can now register for their first or second COVID-19 vaccine doses through the MOH-approved app, Sehhaty and can request an appointment through the “priority” service.
Several cases of black fungus have been identified in India as the country also battles with surging COVID-19 cases.
