The Saudi General Organization for the Conservation of Coral Reefs and Marine Turtles in the Red Sea announced that the site, located on the Four Sisters Islands, hosts over 2,500 turtle nests.
These islands serve as essential nesting grounds for both green turtles and critically endangered hawksbill turtles, which rely on returning to these same beaches each year to nest. By safeguarding these habitats, the organization hopes to help stabilize and protect the endangered turtle populations in the Red Sea, essential to maintaining the region’s ecosystem balance.
Beyond turtle conservation, the organization has identified over 180 beach nesting sites, which it plans to manage through enhanced conservation and eco-tourism initiatives. Asfahani noted that promoting sustainable tourism will help generate awareness and support for Saudi Arabia’s marine life, bringing both economic and ecological benefits.
The recent discovery emphasizes the importance of dedicated conservation areas like the Four Sisters Islands, which play a pivotal role in preserving the diverse marine life of the Red Sea.
