Saudi Drives Real Change By Banning Death Penalty For Minors And Flogging For All

The Kingdom abolishes the death penalty for minors and bans flogging for all.

Both announcements were ordered by King Salman as The Kingdom regulates to align with The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The decree ensures Saudi is working towards a modernised penal code by replacing the death penalty for minors with a maximum penalty of 10 years in a juvenile detention centre, according to the president of the Saudi government’s Human Rights Commission, in a statement seen by the Associated Press.

Flogging has also been replaced with jail time or community service.

Crown Prince MBS is praised as the major driver for change that’s seen the landscape of Saudi lifestyle habits change dramatically in a few short years

Saudi is in a phase of reform, with a gradual transformation of social norms, (gender mixing at social events, women driving, cinemas reopening) not only to attract tourists, but also bettering the quality of life for Saudis. This is in line with Vision 3030 and the Quality Of Life metrics where the Kingdom is intent on improving both individual’s lifestyles and enhancing the quality of life, to boost the status of Saudi cities so they rank as some of the best in the world.

And while the leap into mixed entertainment, which saw internationally celebrated artists visit Saudi, was highly publicised, the latest reform should be seen as the most important step yet.

With the announcement meaning those who have already served ten years may see their sentences totally dropped, the development is another step proving real change is happening in Saudi.

Saudi took on the milestone presidency of G20 on December 1, 2019 and aims to host the summit, an international forum for governments and central bank governors from 19 countries and the European Union in Riyadh in November
