Imagine waking up after life-saving surgery and finding out your best friend secretly gave you his kidney. Sounds like the plot of a drama series, right? Well, for two longtime buddies in Saudi Arabia, this was very real, and it’s one of the most touching stories we’ve heard in a while.
Shaaker Al Otaibi and Fahad have been inseparable for 17 years. Through thick and thin, they’ve stood by each other’s side, but one day, Shaaker decided to go above and beyond… and then some. What did he do? Oh, just quietly donate one of his kidneys to Fahad, who had been battling end-stage kidney failure for years. Yep, no announcement, no big talk, not even a heads-up to Fahad. Total stealth hero mode.
In a jaw-dropping moment, he revealed that Fahad had no idea who the donor was until after the transplant.
“I just wanted to save his life,” Shaaker said during the interview. “When we learned that our tissue matched, I took it as a sign and moved forward.”
BRB, crying.

But this selfless act launched it into legendary status, sparking a wider national conversation around organ donation and what real friendship looks like.
And it’s not just this story making waves. Saudi Arabia has been seeing a steady rise in live organ donations. In 2024 alone, 1,706 live donor transplants were recorded, a 4.9% jump from the previous year. That includes 1,284 kidney donations and 422 partial liver donations, according to the Saudi Centre for Organ Transplantation.
Stories like Shaaker’s remind us that heroes don’t always wear capes, sometimes, they just quietly show up when it matters most.
