Saudi is taking a major step toward curbing tobacco use by proposing a ban on its sale in small shops, grocery stores, and central markets
The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing announced the draft regulations on the government’s public consultation platform, Istitlaa, inviting citizens to share their feedback before the rules are finalized.
Under the proposed regulations, all tobacco products must be kept out of sight in commercial establishments and adhere to Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) standards
Additionally, strict measures would reinforce the prohibition of tobacco sales to individuals under 18, requiring retailers to verify age and display graphic health warnings that highlight the dangers of smoking. The draft also prohibits smoking inside retail establishments and mandates clear “No Smoking” signs for both customers and employees.
Beyond tobacco restrictions, the proposal introduces new rules for the sale of energy drinks, including separate storage areas and a ban on sales to individuals under 16
This proposal not only tightens tobacco restrictions but also introduces new rules for energy drinks, including separate storage and a ban on sales to those under 16.
Health and safety regulations for food-handling employees will also see a revision, barring workers with infectious diseases from handling food. Those showing symptoms of foodborne illnesses or serious conditions like hepatitis and typhoid fever would be temporarily removed from duty.
By implementing these measures, Saudi aims to enhance public health, regulate retail practices, and create safer shopping environments!
