This prestigious recognition highlights the reserve’s dedication to environmental sustainability and conservation, marking a significant achievement for Saudi Arabia’s conservation efforts.
This inclusion follows a thorough evaluation by IUCN experts, who assessed the reserve’s success in environmental restoration, wildlife protection, and community involvement.
One of the reserve’s major accomplishments has been the planting of 2.4 million native seedlings and sowing 4 tonnes of seeds, including species such as yarrow, artemisia, and haloxylon. These efforts are part of a broader mission to restore 250,000 hectares of degraded habitats across the reserve.
Additionally, the authority has successfully relocated 1,235 wildlife species, including the rare Arabian oryx, sand gazelles, Arabian gazelles, and the endangered Arabian leopard. This restoration of wildlife populations reflects the reserve’s commitment to biodiversity conservation.
Beyond environmental achievements, the King Salman Royal Reserve Development Authority is known for managing its protected areas using sustainable strategies that balance conservation with community engagement. Their approach ensures that local communities are involved in preserving natural resources, contributing to long-term ecological and developmental goals.
This recognition places the reserve among a global group of protected areas that uphold the highest standards in conservation, further enhancing Saudi Arabia’s role in global environmental leadership.
