Saudi Arabia has started offering Chinese-language classes in schools to provide young Saudis with new language skills and promote cultural understanding
The initiative, which began this year, is part of an education agreement between Saudi Arabia and China signed in the previous year.
Currently, 175 educators are teaching Mandarin in primary and middle schools across the Kingdom
The program is intended to create more opportunities for students, whether they seek careers in international markets or wish to study at leading Chinese universities.
The introduction of Mandarin classes has been positively received by both Saudi and Chinese communities
Viewing it as a step toward greater cultural understanding and practical language development. In Saudi Arabia, parents see it as a way to expose students to a broader global culture, while Chinese families see it as an opportunity to share their heritage internationally.
Educators see the program as beneficial for both countries, as it is expected to ease communication and enhance understanding between future generations. With increasing numbers of Chinese visitors and business activities in Saudi Arabia, the ability to speak Mandarin is becoming more relevant. Meanwhile, Arabic instruction is expanding in Chinese schools, reflecting a growing exchange between the two cultures.
The Saudi Ministry of Education plans to gradually extend the program
Mandarin instruction is expected to reach up to the third secondary grade by 2029. This phased approach is intended to assess the program’s success and make any necessary adjustments.
Aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, this initiative represents a significant investment in education, aimed at strengthening global ties and preparing Saudi youth for a more connected world.
