This initiative, spearheaded by the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation, aims not only to save lives but also to alleviate the suffering of patients in need, offering them renewed hope and opportunities for a better quality of life.
Riyadh emerged as the leader in organ donation intentions, with approximately 142,000 residents committed to contributing their organs after death. Following closely behind is Makkah, where 115,000 individuals have pledged their support, underscoring a widespread embrace of this humanitarian cause across the kingdom. Despite regional variations, with the Eastern Province and Najran showing varying levels of participation, the overall enthusiasm for organ donation highlights a growing awareness and empathy among Saudis towards healthcare needs.
Dr. Talal Al-Goufi, head of the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation, emphasized the challenges in overcoming cultural barriers, noting that a significant percentage of families still decline organ donation requests following a loved one’s passing. Addressing this, the center continues to intensify education and awareness campaigns, aiming to increase acceptance and understanding of organ donation’s life-saving impact.
Since its inception, the organ transplantation program in Saudi Arabia has witnessed substantial growth, with more than 6,000 organs transplanted from deceased donors alone by the end of 2023. The central region, encompassing major cities like Riyadh and Jeddah, leads in successful transplant procedures, reflecting the robust development of medical services across the country’s 26 transplantation centers.
