Saudi's First Female Environmental Inspectors Celebrate 5,000 Patrols In Royal Reserve

Saudi Arabia’s first female wildlife ranger unit, part of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve, has proudly completed their 5,000th patrol since their induction in 2022

These women have been pivotal in conserving the Reserve’s natural and cultural heritage while breaking new ground for women in conservation careers in the Kingdom. This historic initiative aligns with Vision 2030’s goal of building a more progressive and inclusive society.

Andrew Zaloumis, CEO of the Reserve Development Authority, praised the female rangers for their dedication

He noted that women’s involvement in conservation is vital worldwide. Women make up 33% of the Reserve’s 183-member team, far exceeding the global average of less than 11%. The Reserve is empowering women from the local community to become leaders in conservation, further promoting career development and income growth for locals.

Around 80% of the Reserve’s workforce comes from the local community, ensuring sustainability in both conservation efforts and economic development

These women patrol the Reserve’s vast 24,500 km² area daily, safeguarding ecosystems from illegal activities like hunting, logging, and overgrazing, often working alongside the Special Forces for Environmental Security (SFES).

Ruqayah Awad Al-Balawi, one of the first rangers, emphasized the importance of local women’s participation, saying, “We know the land and its needs best.” The rangers undergo continuous training in various areas such as patrolling, biodiversity monitoring, and leadership development, equipping them with the skills needed to protect Saudi Arabia’s endangered wildlife and landscapes.

The success of these female rangers is a testament to the Reserve’s commitment to fostering the next generation of conservationists and advancing women’s roles in environmental protection.
