A large-scale search-and-rescue mission is ongoing in Jeddah’s North Obhur after two Saudi men went missing during a diving trip on August 3, as stated by Arab News.
According to the report, Wissam Al-Zahrani and Fahad Arafat departed from a resort in North Obhur around 1:30 p.m. for a recreational dive. Concerns arose when they failed to return after more than eight hours, prompting a missing persons’ report to be filed with the Jeddah Coastal Guard.
After hours of intensive work, rescuers recovered the body of Arafat on August 5, bearing marks that suggested a possible shark attack, Arab News stated. Efforts to locate Al-Zahrani remain ongoing.
Baraa Al-Amoudi, a relative of Wissam, told Arab News:
“Wissam, a professional and experienced diver, had participated in a diving trip last Sunday afternoon with two of his colleagues, one of whom was his cousin, Ammar. The three of them went diving in the open sea. After completing the first dive, everyone went to the beach to rest. Ammar decided to leave the resort after the break. Wissam Al-Zahrani and his friend Fahad Arafat returned to the sea for a second dive … but neither of them came back to the surface after that.”
Fahad Arafat, described as a father of three and a skilled diver known for his good character, also had extensive experience in the water. The search took another turn on August 9 when part of a torn diving suit, goggles, and an air cylinder were found. However, the rest of the diving equipment, and Al-Zahrani himself, remain missing, deepening the family’s anguish and the mystery surrounding the case.
