In a truly “roar”-some spectacle, Riyadh experienced a rare sighting of the metropolis’ newest resident: a wandering lion The bustling streets were taken by surprise as this majestic feline strolled through the capital. It didn’t last for long, though, as the environmental police, who swung into action early, were able to catch the lion. The lion was then handed over to a specialty agency.
The kingdom’s laws prohibit the trading, keeping, and display of endangered animals, with severe penalties awaiting those who dare to break these regulations. Offenders can face up to 10 years of imprisonment, coupled with a hefty fine of up to SR30 million.
2021 witnessed a chilling reminder of the dangers posed by these untamed predators. Authorities sounded the alarm bells, cautioning against the rearing of such fierce beasts after an unfortunate incident claimed the life of a keeper at the paws of a lion.
