The Riyadh Metro Is Getting A Major Upgrade Toward Diriyah

Riyadh residents are looking forward to a major boost in city connectivity as the Riyadh Metro’s Red Line prepares for a significant expansion, bringing a faster, more efficient way to move from east to west across the capital

With this announcement, travel that once took well over an hour could soon be cut to around 40 minutes, reshaping how people commute, explore, and enjoy the city.

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City confirmed that the Red Line will be extended from its current northern point at King Saud University all the way to Diriyah

The expansion includes five new stations — two serving King Saud University and three located throughout Diriyah — creating easier access to education, heritage sites, and recreational spaces.

In a standout move toward integrated transportation, the Red Line will also feature a shared station with the Yellow Line, which will help link key destinations like King Salman International Airport to other major hubs such as Qiddiya City, a future entertainment and lifestyle destination.

Trains on this route are expected to reach speeds of up to 250 km/h, providing a reliable and speedy alternative to traditional road travel

The expansion aligns with Riyadh’s broader goal of establishing a comprehensive public transit network that reduces traffic congestion, promotes sustainability, and enhances the daily lives of residents and visitors alike.

For many in Riyadh, what was once a long city traverse will soon be a smooth, scenic metro ride — connecting culture, education, work, and play in under an hour.
