The Saudi Geological Survey Has Dismissed A Geologist’s Red Sea Earthquake Prediction

Earlier this week, claims about a strong earthquake that might occur at any time near the Red Sea by a Saudi geologist did the rounds on social media. Now the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) has officially downplayed recent predictions of a powerful earthquake in the Red Sea, saying they are merely personal opinions.

According to a report in the online portal Al Arabiya English, the SGS’s spokesman, Tareq Aba Al Khail, said, “What has recently been raised about the occurrence of a quake in the Red Sea are mere personal opinions, which are not based on studies and follow-ups. They are mere predictions.”

He also said that predicting the time and site of earthquakes is nearly impossible. Moreover, the seismic magnitude in the Red Sea is generally low, and the number of tremors in the area does not exceed a few dozen a week, making them impalpable and harmless.
