Twitter was abuzz this week after a video of a plane seemingly stuck in the skies over Saudi Arabia made the rounds on social media.

The plane, which appears to be a commercial airliner, appears to be suspended in the air without moving and has left many viewers scratching their heads.

The first theories revolved around the notion that the plane may have been that the passenger jet was facing strong headwinds. However, as the day went on, a few more creative theories began to emerge.

But then, a lot of people have claimed to have witnessed something similar previously.

This is mad I legit seen this for myself a few months ago near Manchester airport and I thought nobody would believe in me if I told them. I was shocked because it’s stuff you see online and think never in person.

But the most plausible explanation seems to be a case of strong headwinds.

An airplane can hover or “freeze” above the ground (have zero ground speed) if the speed of a head wind it is flying into is greater than the stall speed of the airplane. In fact it can even go backwards relative to the ground.
