Avatar

Millions of pilgrims are flocking to the Holy City of Makkah to take part in what is a once in a lifetime experience.

Of these millions, most will do the rites that are part of the pilgrimage in Makkah and leave without truly getting to feel the essence of Makkah.

So here we have come up with this list of things to see that in the Holy City that will help pilgrims understand Makkah specifically and Saudi Arabia in general better.

1) Exhibition of the Two Holy Mosques

Located on the old Makkah road, this exhibition containing artifacts mostly from Masjid Al Haram makes for a must-visit. From old coins unearthed during excavations near the Zamzam to ancient manuscripts of the Quran amongst others are on display. Plus, entry is free.

2) Bin Sulaiman Palace

This age-old palace is located close to Masjid Al Haram. Though not open for tourists the structure gives a glimpse of the city’s rich past that has been influenced by countries and cultures from all around the world.

3) Jannat Ul Muala Cemetry

Located a few hundred meters from Masjid Al Haram, it is in this cemetery when many of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H)’s companions have been buried.

4) Makkah Antiquities and Heritage Museum.

Because what is better than getting to see history than in a historic structure? The museum is housed in what was once a royal guest house called the Zaher Palace. It contains a lot of artifacts from around the country including many that date to the pre-Islamic era. The museum is divided into multiple halls and one of the most intriguing ones is the hall that tells the story of the formation of Saudi Arabia and its early years.

5) Kiswa Factory

Located a stone’s throw away from the Exhibition of the Two Holy Mosques it is here where the Kiswa (the cloth that drapes the Kaaba) is made. Entry is possible only through tour groups and one gets to see the precision and hard work that goes into making the cloth.
