If you happened to look up at the skies over Rafha yesterday, you might have thought you were looking at something from another world! Residents in the Northern Borders Region were treated to a breathtaking and rare natural phenomenon: a giant solar halo that painted a perfect ring around the sun.
Photos and videos quickly went viral across social media, showing the spectacular sight that left everyone in awe.
Don’t worry, this wasn’t a glitch in the matrix…

A solar halo is a fascinating natural optical phenomenon caused by sunlight interacting with tiny ice crystals floating high up in the Earth’s atmosphere. When sunlight hits these hexagonal crystals, it bends and reflects the light at a specific 22-degree angle, creating the iconic ring we saw in Rafha.
It’s essentially nature’s way of showing off its physics skills! The AFAQ Society for Astronomy confirmed that such a distinct solar halo is a rare occurrence in Saudi Arabia. In fact, the last time the Kingdom’s skies saw a similar spectacle was nearly a year ago, on April 24, 2025!

Beyond its stunning beauty, a solar halo can also be a subtle hint from Mother Nature about upcoming weather changes. According to Barjas Al-Fulaih of the AFAQ Society for Astronomy, these halos often indicate high humidity in the upper atmosphere. Historically, such conditions can precede shifts in climatic factors, potentially signaling that a change in weather – and yes, maybe even some much-needed rain – is on the horizon!
