Jeddah Is Going To Get Its Own Film Festival And It’s Going To Be Huge

Film festivals in most Gulf countries aren’t much of a thing, but this planned Jeddah one will probably change the status quo.

The Kingdom’s Minister of Culture, Prince Badr Bin Abdullah, made a wide range of announcements earlier this that seek to promote arts, film and culture. Some of the headline-grabbing announcements include a residency visa for artists, film funding and a Jeddah based film festival.

According to Arabian Business, the film fest will be called the Red Sea International Film Festival and will be held on annual basis. Prince Badr shed some light on what the festival aims to be about.

He said the festival will focus on emerging talents from Saudi Arabia and the greater Middle East, as well as Asia, South America and Africa.

A separate entity called the Red Sea Film Foundation has been set up to organize the event that will have Saudi director Mahmoud Sabbagh as its President.

Sabbagh is known for his comedy films like “Barakah Meets Barakah” and “Amra and the Second Marriage.”

But the slew of announcements relating to the film festival wasn’t over as it was announced that a year-round film lab called the Red Sea Film Lodge will also be set up. So yes, this is the place that budding directors and artists should probably be heading to.

The first edition of the film festival is expected to be held in 2020.
