Masjid Al Haram in Makkah receives thousands of pilgrims with special needs on a yearly basis. To address their needs Shaykh Al-Sudais, head of the presidency, recently inaugurated a project that will directly benefit them.
According to the Saudi Gazette, three separate areas have been assigned within the mosque for pilgrims with special needs.
Each area caters to a specific type of special need; one area caters to those with visual impairments, another to those physically challenged and finally one area has been allotted to those with hearing impairments.
Praying areas for those physically challenged are located near gate number 68 and even electric wheelchairs are provided to them so that they can go about with their rites.
Speaking to the Saudi Gazette Dr Misfer Asiri, director of social service at the presidency said “We serve the worshippers in the area with Zamzam water and meals. We also screen videos of lessons offered by the sheikhs inside the Grand Mosque as well as the fatwas issued by them. All the videos have subtitles in several languages. There is a sign language translator to interpret the Friday sermon to people with hearing problems. He also translates questions from the deaf people for the sheikhs and the answers given by them. This takes place every Friday after the Juma prayer.”
