Uber is testing a new feature for women drivers in the Kingdom that will leave them with the choice of choosing to drive women-only clients too.
The considerate new initiative comes as a support to the women in Saudi who want to work and benefit financially, while still being respected with regards to cultural context.
The pilot for this initiative will be rolled out in the fall and be fully available to all female drivers in Saudi Arabia. In a research carried out by the car-hailing app along with Ipsos (leading market researcher), 31% of those surveyed said they were interested in driving as a means to earn money. However, 74% of plausible women drivers who were interviewed admitted to only being interested in driving female clients.
We are honored to play a part in this historic moment for women in Saudi Arabia. By empowering female entrepreneurs, Uber is proud to provide the same economic opportunities currently enjoyed by male drivers across the Kingdom. We have partnered with Saudi women to explore how Uber can work for them, and we will continue listening as we build the future of urban mobility in Saudi Arabia together.
Pierre Dimitri Gore-Coty, VP & Head of Operations for Uber EMEA
Big props to Uber for carrying out the research and considering the sensitivities and cultural contexts in the Kingdom. Smart move.
