Authorities Are Drafting A Law That Will Fine Residents Who Waste Food

According to Hash KSA, The Shura Council has reportedly announced the creation of a system that tracks wasted or excessive amounts of food that is prepared specifically for special occasions. Special occasions being weddings, Ramadan tents or gatherings of that sort.

Naturally, Saudis on Twitter had mixed reactions on the supposed new initiative.

Food wasters could be fined if caught wasting food

The system is being done to combat the extravagance and bragging in certain banquets.

Some users argued that traditional Saudi gatherings aren’t as to blame as other extravagant events

Why is it whenever this subject of excessive amounts of food wasted, they only display images of traditional Saudi dishes such as thabeeha, when highly priced wedding or receptions buffet’s cakes cost more then 10 thabeeha dishes combined?”

Another user argued the point above…

“The image is used as a metaphor, we can’t really decide if it’s being excessive or not unless the amount of attendees within a special occasion are accounted for. For example, if a gathering has around 30 attendees, then it wouldn’t consider being excessive. Excessive is when having more then what is needed or required, which is standard that still unfortunately exists till today.”

” There are those who pay for first class tickets for the whole family that cost 100,000 Riyals, accommodation in hotels that cost 10,000 Riyals per night, and yet a thabeeha along with it’s preparation price would not amount to the price of a cup of coffee in these establishments.

With many not really up to the idea of the fines, some agree with the new system

“A proper discussion to take to preserve necessities, thank you Shura Council.”
