Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman mentioned that women in the Kingdom do not need to wear the hijab or the black abaya (a loose-fitted robe), as long as their attire is “decent and respectful”. His Highness was quoted making these statements during an interview with CBS for the show ’60 Minutes’.
Since the Crown Prince’s proposed reforms to the Kingdom have taken place, more rights for women has definitely boosted. First, with them being allowed to drive, then being prioritised for more roles in the workforce and being able to attend mixed public sporting events.
During the interview, His Highness mentioned that laws in Saudi are clear and stipulate with Sharia laws: that women wear decent, respectful clothing, like men.
He continued by saying, “This, however, does not particularly specify a black abaya or a black head cover. The decision is entirely left for women to decide what type of decent and respectful attire she chooses to wear,” reports Gulf News.

However, the country is witnessing rises to social freedoms more and more with the Crown Prince’s reforms. Women in the Kingdom have recently started wearing more colorful abayas, or ones with intricate detailing as opposed to the traditional black. Open abayas over casual clothing and jeans are also a common sight in other parts of the country.
