Don’t get too comfortable, if you think you’ve yet to receive a fine even after using your phone while driving- think it no more.

Reports claim that the Traffic Authority announced it will be monitoring traffic violations for those who use their mobile phones by hand and are without seatbelts while driving, as of next week.

At the beginning of the year, the Directorate General of Traffic (Muroor) announced that the use of mobile phone while driving was to be electronically monitored. A mere touch of your phone while driving will be considered a traffic violation for which you can be fined SAR150 for the first offense.

According to Saudi Gazette, that fine may increase to SAR300 with the possibility of being detained for 24 hours. The Muroor also said that seatbelts will also be electronically monitored and motorists who do not wear them are susceptible to a fine.

The Traffic Department installed cameras along the Kingdom’s roads to help detect drivers who use their phones, following a study that shows this has been one of the biggest causes for road accidents. As well, these cameras can easily detect those without seatbelts.
